David Laing kicked a 27-yard field goal with one second left to give Butler a 20-17 victory over Drake today and earn the program’s first Pioneer Football League title since 1994.

The victory sends Butler (10-1, 7-1 PFL) into the Gridiron Classic on Dec. 5 at Butler Bowl against the Northeast Conference champ. Like the PFL, the Northeast Conference is a non-scholarship, NCAA championship subdivision conference. Butler tied for first in the PFL with Dayton, but earned the Gridiron Classic berth because it beat Dayton earlier this season.

The score was tied 17-17 when Butler’s Nick Caldicott intercepted a pass at the Drake 49-yard line with 43 seconds left. Six plays later, quarterback Andrew Huck hit Zach Watkins with a 19-yard completion to put the ball at the Drake 14. Butler ran one more play before sending out Laing, who drilled it through the uprights to give the Bulldogs a program-record 10th victory.
